An expensive five cents

MAKE doubly sure that all your accounts are paid in the full - otherwise you may have the same trouble as me, says Danny Cassiem of Wellington.
Cassiem recently found out that he had been blacklisted by Beares, due to a debt of a mere five cents.
According to Cassiem his ex-wife had bought a washing machine from this company in 1999, but had defaulted on the payments, a fact he was not aware of.
“When I tried to open another account with them in 2003, they told me about the outstanding amount.
“I then paid them R2716, which I thought was the full amount to clear the amount.”
Cassiem says he was shocked to find out, last week, that there was an outstanding amount of five cents, for which he had been blacklisted.
He had to pay R22 to get the information on the blacklisting.
“The staff I talked to at Beares in Paarl and also Cape Town, just laughed and said it was ridiculous.
“However, I had to pay the five cents to the shop and then had to fax the receipt to their head office in order to have my name removed from the blacklist.”
This exercise cost Cassiem hours and quite a lot more than five cents in costs.
