PAARL Kidz Beadz is an income generating project for HIV/Aids affected families in Paarl.

Healthcare professionals working with people living with HIV/Aids founded this non-profit organisation. The project is an extension of the positive beadwork project that was initiated by the Kidzpositive Family Fund at Groote Schuur Hospital.

The Paarl Kidz Beadz initiative provides mothers with a source of income. They are trained and receive raw materials to produce beadwork.

The mother does the beadwork at home and brings it to hospital on clinic days. The project markets their products and aims to provide a sustainable income at grassroots. Up to 80% of the purchase price goes to the mother who made the item.

The project is managed by Dr Madri Carstens and Dr Nelis Grobbelaar.

Although HIV infection is to date incurable, children can live with HIV/Aids for many years. With proper care they can be happy and enjoy life.

“Everyday reality is that mothers in Paarl keep hoping,” says Dr Grobbelaar.

“They battle with their own HIV infection and devote themselves in the care of their sick children.

“Hope comes from our vision of a better world: When children can grow up feeling safe; where people who are ill do not have to hide away, but can receive the love and care they need; where our lives are valued and our bodies respected.

“Hope will grow if we allow this attitude to inform our daily work and gives us the opportunities to create a better society.”

* Beadwork includes flags, Aids pins, keyrings and special items like company logos.

For big orders they need six weeks, excluding any design-time. They do have some items in stock that includes national flags and Aids pins.
