Aids: take action today
2006-12-07
THE Drakenstein Multi-sectoral Action Team (M-Sat), formerly known as the HIV/Aids forum, organised a weeklong programme to raise awareness for Aids. World Aids Day was on Friday 1 December.
The international theme for this year was ‘Take Action Today’. Mayor Charmaine Manuel appealed to communities not to isolate people with HIV/Aids, because it is a disease just like any other.
“We need to give support to Aids victims and should not treat them as if they are contagious.
“We also have the moral responsibility to care for Aids orphans and households headed by children.
“We need to destigmatise Aids in order for the victims to lead a fruitful life.
“As part of government we would like to appeal to all our citizens, especially the youth, to be responsible in making their choices and we want to reiterate the government’s call: Abstain, Be Faithful, Condomise.”
