GUNMEN escaped with close to R150 000 in cash during an armed robbery at Shah’s Corner in Carterville, Wellington.

At approximately 10:00 on Saturday morning, the owner of Ou Pellie Liquor Store, MP Moodley and his daughter, left the shop at Shah’s Corner to deposit money at a local bank.

The girl was carrying a green bag in which the money was, and while her father was unlocking his BMW, she felt a sudden tug from behind.

She held on to the bag and when she turned around a man held a knife to her throat.

She let go of the bag and when her father came to her assistance two other armed men joined them and the three of them jumped into the BMW and fled from the scene.

Moodley alerted the police and various vehicles joined the search, tracing the BMW to where it had been abandoned near the Mbekweni station in Drommedaris Street.

The police were able to capture one of the men while he tried to flee, but the other two fugitives had already fled across the railway line.

Simpiwe Gqotso appeared in the Paarl Magistrate's Court in connection with the robbery. Gqotso has previously been arrested for house-breaking.
