Swimming saves lives

Swimming saves lives

2006-12-07

WHILE everyone is gearing up for the summer holidays, which often requires beating the heat in a swimming pool, a river or a dam, many people are unaware of the dangers that lie hidden in the waters.

Annually many people, especially children, drown in the Drakenstein area, and much of this is due to ignorance.

Last week Kfm radio station, in conjunction with WP Aquatics and Paarl Aquarius swimming club, held an awareness campaign at the Paarl East swimming pool to equip children with swimming skills.

Rivers and dams are many times the culprits of drowning victims, especially in the hot summer months.

Nazli Gaidien, swimming instructor at Paarl Aquatics, has taken it to heart for a considerable time now to train children in the Drakenstein area basic swimming skills.

She said that the aim of the awareness campaign last week was to teach children the basic principals of swimming, as well as to foster a general water safety awareness in the children.

Children are warned never to swim alone, not to swim with clothes on (this can weigh them down never to push anyone into the water
Nazli encourages children of all ages to learn to swim. She can be contacted at 073-184-9627.
