Dramatic action in duck race

Dramatic action in duck race

2006-12-07

RUBBER duck racers swapped the waves and brine of the ocean for a flat-water course on a dam when the second leg of the Rat Race Media P750 Inflatable Series took place in Worcester last weekend.

The three categories of Standards, Blue Prints and Modified all competed in two qualifiers and a final at the dam next to the Mountain Mill Mall.

The racers enjoyed perfect weather for fast top water action on Saturday with the only incident a collision in the final of the Modified boats.

The boat of Tiaan Vermeulen and Rianto van Niekerk ran into a buoy after connecting with another contestant.

They were lucky to walk away with only a broken nose between them.

On Sunday a wind of some 60km/h forced the racers to change tactics and make the necessary adjustments to their boats.

The nasty conditions caused some co-pilots to fall out of their boats, but the dramatic moment of the event belonged to the team of Hermann and Nico van Geems of Maloy Chemicals. Their boat nose-dived resulting in a broken leg for Nico.

The duo of Steyn Basson and Jan Kriel of Wellington who race for Champs Beverages finished second in the P750 Blue Print class, with JD de Villiers and Chris Vos (Quantum Wealth) tenth.

Jacques Matthee and Andras Molnar (Team Ceasar Racing/Ranger Outback Promotions), students of the Boland Agricultural High School, finished third in the Standard class.

Other local racers Jacques Groenewald and Frans Laubscher (Team Zing) finished in the eighth position in the P750 Standard class.

The overall winners of the three classes were Dreyer van Niekerk and Dudley de Reuck (Team Nexus) in the Standard class, Wimpie Ackermann and Dian Giliomee (Team Vodacom/Telectro) in the
P750 Blue Print class and Tiaan Vermeulen and Rianto van Niekerk (Team Econo Decking) in the Modifieds class.
