Mbekweni teams draw

LAST weekend was the moment of truth for the two Mbekweni football teams, Mbekweni United and Cosmos, taking part in the SAB League.
The two archrivals locked horns in what is a well-known derby of the township dating back to the late 90s when United established itself as one of the strong clubs in Mbekweni.
The spectator turn-out was good with the stands filled almost to capacity.
The match started at a fast pace with both sides attacking relentlessly.
It was Mbekweni Cosmos who drew first blood with a well-taken, but unexpected shot about 30m away by their right back.
Their 1-0 lead gave Cosmos more confidence, attacking to increase on their advantage.
Although rattled early on by that surprise goal, the United players settled down, absorbed the pressure and started playing with their normal flair.
Their attacks created some gaps, but chances to score were missed by Xolisani Qambela and Thaweni Bini, making the half-time score 1-0.
The second half saw Mbekweni United playing with more purpose and in so doing completely outplaying their opponents.
Striker Qambela however squandered a lot of scoring opportunities for Mbekweni United.
It was only with 15 minutes left in the match that Qambela eventually beat the Cosmos goalkeeper at close range to level the score.
This was much to the delight of the Mbekweni United fans who were clearly frustrated by his bad finishing all day.
This very entertaining match ended in a 1-1 draw.
