Supporting abused children
2006-12-14
IT is widely known that testifying in court is a very traumatic experience and even more so for sexually abused children.
RAPCAN (Resources Aimed at the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect) is a Children’s Rights Organisation advocating the rights of children.
One of Rapcan’s projects is the Child Witness Project operating at six Sexual Offences Courts including the one at the Paarl Regional Court.
The aim of the project is to reduce the trauma young victims of sexual abuse suffer when required to testify. This is achieved by providing them with court preparation and emotional support.
Children and their parents spend an entire day at court, during which time the court supporters of the project provide the children with food, as well as emotional support.
Rapcan can be contacted on 872-2548 or 872-2372.
