Praise for volunteers
2006-12-14
“WHEN thinking about the work done by the Cansa Toktokkies I am reminded of the saying ‘Morality consists of individual acts of kindness culminating in a mighty force of good’,” said Mayor Charmaine Manuel at the recent function for volunteers, held in Paarl by the Cancer Association of South Africa.
“The Drakenstein Town Council is proud to acknowledge the role of the volunteers in our society.
“Volunteers who are committed to service in their respective communities are often the glue which keeps campaigns like the Toktokkies and others together.
“This spirit of voluntarism cuts across all social groups, cultures and religion.
“You, the volunteers present here today, are proof that this unique, unselfish service is truly a part of our South African identity.
“Today, as we acknowledge the incredible work done by our volunteers, let us be mindful of the challenges as the Aids pandemic sweeps our country.
“As our youth, the vulnerable, the marginalised in our communities struggle with the many hurdles that they need to overcome, we must renew our efforts and recommit ourselves to continue to serve our people to ensure a better life for all.
“It was through volunteerism that South Africa became a democracy. I believe that with people like you, we rekindle the flame.”
