Retief wines launched
2006-12-14
AFTER five generations and 133 years on the farm Uitkyk, Noorder Paarl, the Retiefs have released their first wine.
The Retiefs have made “Uitkyk” their home for five generations, since 1873.
Established in 1747, on the cool east facing slopes of Paarl Mountain, it was originally a blacksmith’s home and forge.
This choice of location was not influenced by the excellent terroir, but by the blacksmith’s needs: these were water, provided by a mountain spring, and the proximity to the wagon trail which linked Cape Town and the hinterland.
This trail was later bordered by oaks, and, while most have succumbed to the ravages of time and urbanisation, three survive on Uitkyk to this day, as firmly rooted to this fertile land as are the Retiefs.
“We trust that terroir, passion and proud heritage find expression in our wine,"says Graham Retief.
""But you’ll have to visit us yourself to enjoy the view from our 'Lookout’ with our red wines”, adds Retief.
