Long, lazy summer days

SCHOOL is out and after another year scholars have returned home knowing that they have a long summer holiday of sleeping late, watching TV and doing only their favourite things.
Mostly, the holidays are a time for relaxation.
Christmas is just around the corner and presents will soon be on everybody’s mind, so what will kids be up to this holiday, where are they going and what do they want for Christmas?
Asking around has proved that the most popular pastime is definitely the TV, whether it’s watching your favourite shows, a DVD, playing Play Station 2 or Xbox 360.
High-speed car racing is the order of the day with the “Fast and the Furious” and “San Andreas” pronounced top of the list. The Computer and Play Station Sims games are also very popular, where you can create your own house, characters and pets.
Sitting inside is not the only thing on the holiday agenda. Adrew-Nisha Saas competed in a drummie competition last week in Bellville before setting off to Paternoster with her parents.
Mpumelelo Majaolo and his friend Aviwe Ndknkua say playing soccer is the best thing to do with the holiday and Christmas should be spent at home with your family.
They both love going to the mall and were excited to say they could eat “burgers!” on their outing.
Sports are high on the list of boys’ social activities.
Ammaal Jacobs and his friends love playing rugby and cricket to spend time together, but also saying they will be going away with their parents all over South Africa, to Durban and even Johannesburg.
Stefan de Kock and his sister Annemie say they will be going to Dwarskersbos - meanwhile they both have fun riding their bikes.
While Stefan thinks Play Station 2 games would be the perfect present Annemie and her classmates would rather have Bratz dolls, the popular new toy for girls that sport sparkling jewellery, fashionable clothes, shoes and tiny pets.
Going to the mall, shopping or to a dance party with friends, staying over at their houses or going out for the day are just a few of the social things their parents now easily agree to.
There are no more worries about staying up late on a school night and plenty of empty days to fill.
Emma Hanekom says she enjoys going to the movies with her sister and friends and that the best presents are CDs or DVDs while her mother laughs and says, “She likes anything shiny”.
For all girls that means bracelets, earrings, necklaces and pretty trinkets.
There is a vast variety of games, pastimes, social days and sports to keep everyone busy this Christmas holiday.
Fun and unwinding from the stresses of school will be going on all over, helped along by plenty of junk food and much anticipated Christmas presents. So give a thought to those carefree school kids recharging their batteries for another year in the classroom.
