SPECTATORS were treated to some fast-paced, exciting racing during the final meet of the Boland Cycling Union’s Omnium Track Championships on Saturday.

The championship was made up of four events with cyclists earning points at every event.

Their respective totals were then used to place the top three cyclists in each age category.

“It was definitely a very successful initiative by Boland and the Omnium Championships is already part of the local cycling calendar for 2007,” said organiser, Ian Goetham.

The national junior cyclist, Reginald Benjamin of Rhadsport Cycling Club, was crowned the champion in the open category after earning a total of 24 points.

His team mates Grand Stuurman (14 points) and Gerswin Vlotman (11 points) finished second and third respectively.

Benjamin established his dominance during Saturday’s fourth and final event when he won the 50 laps points race.

Vlotman tasted victory in the elimination race whilst Ashley Kulsen (Rhadsport) won the six laps chase race.

Wesley Bradshaw of the Bellville Club won the 1500m race.
In the veteran category Morné van Greuning of the Outriders Cycling Club was the convincing winner of the omnium championships with 32 points.

Richard Botha (Tygerberg) finished second with 17 points followed by Joseph September (Yorkshire) in the third spot with 15 points.

Some top class racing was also seen in the u.16 category with the two KwaZulu-Natal riders, Robert du Preez and Chris Jennings, showing they mean business.

These two will hope to make their mark during the top class festive season track meetings that will be held in the Western Province later this month.

Du Preez won the elimination race and Jennings, after breaking away with Rhadsport’s Brandon Christians, won the 20 laps scratch race.
Evan Carstens won the ten laps points race. The 1500m was won by Clint Hendricks (Rhadsport).

Hendricks with 25 points was also crowned as the new u.16 omnium champion of 2006. Avery Arendse (Yorkshire) was second with 18 points and Chad Hendricks (Bellville) was third with 12 points.

The u.14 category was dominated by Wayne Botha who managed to accumalate 35 points. Emile Jacobs (Millennium Club, 20 points) was second with Joshwill Davids (Yorkshire) third with 14 points.

Davids surprised on Saturday when he won the u.14 six laps scratch race with some blistering speed. Botha won all the other events in this age group on Saturday.

In the women’s category overall victory went to Natasha Marang of Yorkshire.

Bradwin Daniels was untouchable in the u.12 category accummulating a massive 48 points after not losing a single race.

Development in the sport of cycling is also alive and well in Boland.
Several young riders participated with great enthusiasm and in the junior development category Graeme Ockhuis (Yorkshire) was crowned champion. Rhadsport’s Denzil Melly came out tops in the senior category.

The Boland Cycling Union also initiated an inter-club competition on Saturday.

Cyclists who finished amongst the first three positions in each category on Saturday collected points for their clubs.

The development categories were also included in this competition.
At the end of the day it was the youngsters of the Yorkshire Cycling Club that walked away with the inter-club prize. Yorshire won with 63 points and their nearest rival was Rhadsport with 46 points.
