Raats wines to grace tables
2006-12-19
THIS year American Thanksgiving tables were once again groaning under the weight of the traditional turkeys, pumpkin pies and delectable desserts, but local winemaker Bruwer Raats was responsible for adding a South African touch as his Chenin Blancs continue to receive rave reviews in the States.
In the recent issue of the American food and entertaining magazine Bon Appetit, the 2004 Raats Chenin Blanc topped their recommended Thanksgiving wine list.
Described as a crowd-pleaser with “honey and peach notes with a touch of spice”, the article recommended the Raats Chenin Blanc as medium-bodied and versatile and a hit for any Thanksgiving table. At the same time, the 2005 Raats Original Chenin Blanc was awarded 89 points in the Wine Enthusiast magazine’s Buying Guide.
According to assistant tasting director Michael Duffy, Bruwer Raats is one of South Africa’s best with Chenin and he proclaims this vintage a home run.
Duffy describes the wine as “vibrant in the mouth with beautifully matching acidity” and reckons that it calls for food.
Raats is quick to point out that the latest vintages of the Raats Chenin Blanc are perfect companions to any festive season table. “In my opinion Chenin Blanc is probably the most food compatible varietal as it pairs sublimely with a wide variety of dishes from fresh summer salads to sushi and full-flavoured cooked meals,” says Bruwer Raats.
