A TOTAL of 28 local participants, 17 of whom are women, received their EcoCity Youth EcoBuild Programme certificates during a graduation ceremony at the Mbekweni Housing Office recently. They have been engaged in the programme for a year, whereby they were taken through an integrated training programme designed to empower them with skills that would enable them to be economically self-reliant.
“This is a joyous occasion where we celebrate the achievements of the youth to contribute to society,” said local housing councillor, Arthob Petersen, in welcoming guests.
In attendance were Drakenstein Mayor Charmaine Manuel, Ray Rughubar (Chief Director for Housing in the Provincial Legislature), his Head of Department Shanaaz Majiedt, Jackie Lang from South African Breweries and officials from the Department of Labour.
“You should use your newly acquired knowledge to the advantage of the community.
“We as Council express our hope that you will assist to make a better life for all,” said Mayor Manuel.
She also emphasised the role Petersen was playing in attempts to unblock housing project 2 in Mbekweni.
Training received included a community house builder course, ecological training, business skills and life skills training.
Learners were also involved in providing a community service through the construction of low cost houses working with the local Department of Housing.
“You must make the most of an opportunity that comes along.
“For us this was a great experience that took commitment from us as learners,” said Thembinkosi Somgqeza, speaking on behalf of his fellow students.
The project was made possible through a number of partnerships with the Umsobomvu Youth Fund, provincial Department of Labour, and Drakenstein Municipality.
A number of community structures and local councillors also provided significant support.
South African Breweries donated tool kits to students who received certificates.
