DRAKENSTEIN Municipality organised a week of sport activities in Paarl, Saron and Mbekweni consisting of mini-cricket, mini-soccer, basketball, athletics, indigenous games and tag-rugby.

At all the venues including Dalweide Primary, Paarlzicht Primary and Weltevrede Sportgrounds children were selected to compete in a mini-tournament on Saturday.

At all the venues between 400 and 500 children attended the activities every day.

Drakenstein Municipality provided food and drinks for the children at all the venues.

Unfortunately no children turned up at Paarl Boys' High School Sportgrounds.

A Learn to Swim and Water Safety program was also held at Paarl East Swimming Pool, which was done by Paarl Aquarius Swimming Club.

The week’s activities were concluded on Saturday at Dal Josaphat Sport grounds.

The day started off with a march from Amstelhof Café, along Klein Drakenstein Road and was very well attended. Approximately 500 people joined in the march.

The sport activities went off very well and more than 1000 children took part on the day.

The proceedings at Dal Josaphat were opened by Mayor Manuel and was also attended by Councillors Arthrob Petersen, Abraham Bekeer, Sammy Andrews, Johanna Muller and Cynthia Philander.

Children were also brought in with buses from Saron, Wellington and Mbekweni.

Lots of talented athletes were spotted during the week and on the Saturday.

The Community Games will also be an annual event on the sport calendar of the Drakenstein Municipality.

Also thank you to Boland Cricket, Boland Basketball, Correctional Services (rugby coaches), School Sport Leaders (SSS), community leaders and students from Huguenot College who assisted with the coaching and administration.
