Attack at Paarl Information centre
2007-01-11
TO add insult to injury after numerous armed robberies in the Drakenstein area last year, the Paarl Info Centre at the corner of Main Street and Auret Street was held up at gunpoint shortly before New Year’s Day.
The incident took place in broad daylight on 29 December, when one of the centre’s employees, Riana Dempers, was approached by two men while she was standing outside the office.
They were asking her for directions, when one of the suspects pulled out a firearm and forced her into the office.
He demanded that she hand over the keys of the safe, while the other man kept watch at the entrance.
Dempers eventually handed over a cash box which contained R1400 and the men fled the scene. No arrests have yet been made. During 2006 there was a noted increase in the amounts of armed robberies in Paarl.
Amongst the victims were the Dros restaurant, Debonairs, St Elmo’s Pizzaway, Bakerman Bakery and Daljosaphat Motors.
Apart from these there were also two botched armed robberies at the Allpay payout point at the homing pigeon club and at the Pick ’n Pay Centre in Wellington.
