Three schools in top ten

HREE Paarl schools were cited for excellence in matric results for 2006 and were placed among the top ten schools in the province.
They are (listed alphabetically) La Rochelle, Paarl Boys’ High and Paarl Girls’ High, who were judged on class aggregate, 100% pass rate, matric exemption rate and sustainability (low drop out rate). A total of 157 local matrics achieved A aggregates in the final Senior Certificate examination last year (up from 155 the previous year).
The shining stars among them were Nadine Spies of Huguenot High (4th position in the Western Cape) and two La Rochelle girls, Maryke Thom (6th position) and Chantél Bredenhann (15th position).
Nadine achieved full marks for Accounting and got eight distinctions, while Maryke got full marks for Mathematics and eight distinctions.
Gymnasium High produced 35 students with A aggregates (98,6% pass rate), followed by Boys’ High (33), La Rochelle (29), Paarl Girls’ High (24) and Huguenot (24), all with 100% pass rate.
Also shining with A candidates in their crown are Klein Nederburg (5) with a 95,5% pass rate, Boland Agricultural High (4) with a 97,1% pass rate, Berg River (2) with a 79,5% pass rate, Laborie (2) with a 98,6% pass rate and Paulus Joubert (1), with a 76,7% pass rate.
The pass rate for schools with no A candidates was Franschhoek (100%), New Orleans (86,5%), Kylemore (85,7%), Weltevrede (81,5%), Noorder-Paarl (79,3%), Groendal (75.9%), Desmond Tutu (56,3%) and Charleston Hill (55,9% pass rate).
* In the Independent Examination Board matric results, Bridge House had two students among the top 50 in the country.
They are Suzanne Minne (7 A’s out of 7 subjects) and Mikhail Botha (7 A’s out of 8 subjects). Both have been accepted to study medicine at the University of Cape Town.
The class of 44 (no failures) produced 17 A candidates (38,9% of the class).
There are 153 independent schools in South Africa. This year the 7053 full-time matriculation candidates achieved an overall pass rate of 98,3%.
