Exciting symphony season

Exciting symphony season

2007-01-11

THE Cape Philharmonic Orchestra’s first symphony season for this year is filled with exciting works and performers.

The series starts on 18 January in the City Hall and consists of four concerts:

* The first concert, with the warm Latin-American theme of ‘Tango Sinfonico’ takes place on 18 January in the City Hall.

The exciting young Israeli conductor and composer Ori Leshman will be on the podium, while the soloist will be Lothar Hensel (bandoneon).

Hensel is one of the most sought after bandoneon soloists in the music world and has performed with well-known symphony orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic.

He has played the ‘Concierto para bandoneon’ by Astor Piazzolla more often than the composer himself. This concerto is included in the programme, together with other works by Piazzolla and Hensel himself.

This concert will be repeated on Sunday 21 January in the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre.

* The second concert (25 January, City Hall) is again conducted by Ori Leshman with Vladimir Milosevic (piano) as soloist.

This young Serbian pianist is the recipient of major international prizes and made his Carnegie Hall debut in April 2005, after which he began teaching at the Faculty of Music at the Art University in Belgrade.

He will be playing Brahms’ Piano Concerto No 1 in D minor. Other works on the programme are Weber’s ‘Oberon’ Overture and Schubert’s Symphony No 3 in D major.

* The third concert (1 February, City Hall) sees the return to the podium of Maestro Owain Arwel Hughes.

Maestro Hughes, who played such a key role in the success of the first Cape Town International Summer Music Festival, will be conducting a programme consisting of Rossini’s ‘La gazza ladra’ Overture, Paganini’s Violin concerto No 1 in D major and Brahms’ Symphony No 4 in E minor.

The soloist is the acclaimed Korean violinist Chin Kim, who is much admired for his deep musicality and virtuosity. He is one of the most versatile and sought-after young violinists of today, and in constant demand for exciting and popular work has not been performed by a large orchestra in Cape Town for a while and will be a fitting end to a symphony series containing many highlights.
