Hospice concert in February

Hospice concert in February

2007-01-11

THE Drakenstein Hospice will host another great concert at the Grande Roche amphitheatre on Sunday 25 February at 18:00, featuring Cedric Vanderschrik.

Frank Sinatra’s ‘My way’, Jobim’s ‘The Girl from Ipanema’, Elvis’ ‘It’s now or never’, Jacques Brel’s ‘Season’s in the sun’ and ‘If you go away’, Piaf’s ‘Autumn Leaves’, Dale Wasserman’s ‘Man of the Mancha’, Gypsy kings’ ‘Volare’ and Louis Armstrong’s ‘Mac the knife’. These songs all have one thing in common - they were all translated.

Cedric Vandenschrik has juggled with languages all his life. Born in a French/Italian speaking household he was then exposed to English and Afrikaans.

Who else but he, to uncover some of these unforgettable international songs?

In this sometimes informative, sometimes hilarious, highly entertaining rediscovery of some classic songs, Cedric, accompanied by musical wiz Dave Ledbetter, winds his way through this international musical landscape highlighting the plight of some of the lyrics in the translations.

He explores the heart of many of these songs, uncovering some that incorporate two languages side by side; and offers some fresh interpretations of well-known classics.

Songs have been sung in many languages all over the world, but often the true essence of the lyrics is lost in the translation.

Songs Lost In Translation features compositions made famous by the likes of Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, Jacques Brel, Edith Piaf, Luciano Pavarotti, Lucio Dalla, Sting and more.

With a minimalist musical approach, using guitar and piano, the songs are performed with a “classical” approach echoing the styles of the “Chansonnier” of past eras.

In 2006 Ced released an acoustic album called “Songs for Tomorrow”, featuring a song in French and other ‘translated’ influences. Two of the songs are featured in the show.

Lost in Translation will surprise and dazzle you with its mixture of styles, languages and songs. It will make you rediscover songs in a different language and a different light.

But in the end, music is the universal language!

Tickets are R250 per person, including wine and finger-food.
