Upgrade for Franschhoek sewage works
2007-01-11
THE Franschhoek Waste Water Treatment Works are to be upgraded and quadrupled in size, following concern about the capacity of the works.
The works, with a capacity of 0,75 Ml per day, currently receives an inflow of 1 to 1,5 Ml per day due to the rapid expansion of the town.
The proposed upgrade will increase the capacity to 3 Ml per day, to achieve the special limits standards set by the Department of Water Affairs to allow for winter flow releases into the Berg River.
Release of treated effluent during summer is proposed by means of irrigation only, due to the low level of rivers.
In the past effluent was disposed of by irrigation only, on the farm Basse Provence.
It was previously reported that the Department of Water Affairs had refused the required operating permit, because the management of the works was considered below standard, and because untreated effluent had at times overflowed into the Stiebeuel River which leads to the Berg River.
Currently, a scoping report is being undertaken before expansion of the works can be approved by Stellenbosch Municipality.
Upgrading will include a new inlet works and a new activated sludge facility as well as a new treatment facility, with upgraded chlorine dosing facilities. This should cut down on odours currently experienced in the area.
