Pat on the back - Editorial

MANY learners of the Drakenstein area are patting themselves on the back for their excellent matric results.
Not only did a staggering 174 learners achieve A aggregates, but three of our local schools are also amongst the top ten government schools in the Western Cape.
It is a huge achievement for a relatively small area such as ours to receive such accolades.
With the new school year on our doorstep learners from across the Drakenstein area are readying themselves for the new challenges that lie ahead.
But it is once again a nightmare for many parents who have to dig deep into their pockets to fork out the cash for school uniforms and stationery.
A basic grade 1 school uniform already costs as much as R400 and that does not include sportswear. High school uniforms more than double in cost with escpecially school blazers pushing prices up.
Most children have to supply their own stationery, exercise books and countless other paraphernalia such as flip-files and folders for class.
This makes one long for the barefoot days when a learner was only armed with textbooks, a pencil and a jotter.
Standardised school uniforms with just a badge as identification could certainly contribute to decreasing the burden of costs parents have to bear and put a brake on rising costs.
