MOUNTAIN-BIKERS can again rock up to Wiesenhof for some calf-cramping, saddle-sore action when the fifth annual 24Hours of Wiesenhof race takes place this weekend.

More than 150 riders are gearing up for a fun weekend of riding and camping around the dam.

Competitors’ endurance levels will be put to the ultimate test with entrants trying to finish as many seven kilometre laps as possible in the 24-hour time period.

The sporting part of a 24hour mountain-bike event revolves around a massive relay of teams of four up to eight riders. There are also riders attempting it solo.

“It’s a very social event, as it builds cameraderie between teammates and riders,” says Meurant Botha, organiser of the event.

The route is easy enough for riders across all levels with 75% of the route consisting of wide and flowing single track.

Fast laps of around 20 minutes will ensure lots of activity in the transition area.

The route will never be far from the start/finish area, so spectators can walk to other areas on the trail to see more action.

At night the lights are mounted on bikes and helmets and the course will get a different feel.

The official categories for four-rider teams include: Open, Mixed (at least one of both genders), Junior and the Solo riders (must be 16 years or older).

The event will also have a fun category for teams consisting of five to eight riders.

All finishers will receive medals.

Riders that also want to be part of the action, but cannot ride the full 24hours, can take part in the 3Hours of Wiesenhof competition starting at 09:00 on Sunday and finishing with the 24Hour riders at 12:00.

Entry is R75 per rider and late entries will be accepted at registration from 08:00 on Sunday. For more information visit www.dirtopia.co.za, or call (021) 884-4752.
