LOCAL residents with a household income below R1480 per month who are not in a position to pay for basic municipal services, may apply to Drakenstein Municipality for an indigent subsidy grant of R85 per month.
The grant pays for sewerage, refuse, rent and rates, but water and electricity are excluded.
People wishing to apply for this grant, should do so in writing on the prescribed municipal form.
In addition, residents should make payment arrangements every year if their accounts are in arrears.
The grant takes effect from the date of approval of the application and owners with more than one property do not qualify.
The grant period is dependent on the funds available from Government and proof of unemployment, All Pay pension card or salary advice.
The subsidy grant of R85 is given only if the tenant of municipal property or owner is staying on the premises and is only payable in respect of a current account during the monthly billing run.
Individuals who make themselves guilty of any malpractices, will forfeit payment of the grant.
Each household qualifies on a monthly basis for 6kl water free of charge as well as 50 kWh free electricity with a connection of 20 amps.
The free electricity is extended to indigent debtors, owners with houses worth less than R50 000 and qualifying pensioners irrespective of their electricity current (amp).
The allocation of free services may vary on an annual basis depending on tariff structures and availability of equitable share funds.
Property with valuation less than R50 000 is exempted from payment of rates.
