Spoils shared in local derby

Spoils shared in local derby

THE Novel Paarl Cricket Club played in their second local derby of the season against the visitors, Young Peoples, on Saturday.

The home side scored 198/8 in their innings after they were sent in to bat.

The first wicket fell with the score at 43 in the 17th over. After Bobby Nicholson lost his wicket in the 27th over with the score board reflecting 73/2, the home side lost wickets at regular intervals.

Paarl lost their sixth wicket in the 50th over with the score on 134.

Enter Ockert Erasmus, who hit a quick unbeaten 41 off 36 balls including one boundary and three sixes to give Paarl a descent score.

Opening batsman Robin Andrews (41 4x2) and wicket-keeper Lee-Roy Walters (33 4x3) were the only other batsmen that made some valuable contributions with the bat.

For the visitors Hubert Ontong (3/42), Lorenzo Jacobs (2/47) and Edwin Jacobs (2/36) were their best bowlers.

It looked as if the winning target of 199 would not be any problem for the visitors on a good batting track, if the batsmen showed some discipline.

Ultalyn Ernstzen, though, had other plans. He got rid of the two openers in the first three overs he bowled and left Peoples reeling on 18/2.

Edwin Jacobs (49 3x4) and Imraan Nackerdien (27 4x3, 6x1) added 56 runs before the latter lost his wicket after being caught and bowled by Erasmus.

With the start of the 51st over, the visitors needed 40 runs to win with ten overs to go. Things got very tense as they needed just seven runs to win in the last two overs, with three wickets in hand.

Rohan Goetham got rid of Lorenzo Jacobs in the penultimate over with the addition of only a single run.

It was up to Lyndon Fredericks to be the hero or villain when the captain gave him the ball to bowl the final over.

The first four balls were all dot balls. Two runs were scored from the penultimate ball.

When the final ball was bowled four runs were needed by the visitors to win the match but Fredericks turned out to be the home side’s hero as his final ball was also a dot ball.

Ernstzen (2/19), Erasmus (2/42) and Goetham (2/45) took wickets.

The batting efforts of Dominique Daniels (41 4x5) and Joshua Cupido (28 4x1, 6x2) were all in vain for the visitors. The visitors ended on 195/8.

Paarl II (142) lost their match against the home side Young Peoples (252/7) by a 102 runs.

Chester Kuiler (64 4x7, 6x1), Lindsay Davey (71 4x7, 6x2), J Williams (2/25) and Brett Mitchell (2/12) performed well for Peoples whilst Brenton van Schoor (2/44) and Charl Malan (3/50) and Wade Anderson (44 4x1) valiantly tried for Paarl.
