THE Executive Mayor of the Cape Winelands District Municipality, Councillor Clarence Johnson, has handed over a cheque of R355 375 to the provincial Commissioner of Police Mzwandile Petros to assist against crime.
The money is meant to specifically assist community policing forums.
Among the Boland areas which will benefit are Wellington (R20 000), Paarl East (R40 000), Saron/Gouda (R15 000), Mbekweni (R35 000), Groot Drakenstein (R10 000) and Franschhoek (Tourism, R20 000).
The Mayor said these funds are an indication of the Cape Winelands District Municipality’s commitment to projects that are aimed at fighting crime.
This district municipality has thus far assisted the police with money to the tune of R2 400 000.
Mayor Johnson voiced his satisfaction with the reduction of crime by ten percent in the district. He stressed that even more has to be done to curb the level of tik and other drug addictions.
Commissioner Petros thanked the Cape Winelands District Municipality and urged all citizens and government structures to work with the police in combating crime.
The Commissioner and the Mayor signed an agreement that will be a basis for monitoring and informing one another about how the money is spent.
