Paarl secures spot in Super 8

THE Paarl Cricket Club enjoyed a wonderful weekend when all three teams won their matches.
The first team of Novel Paarl made sure of the fifth place when they beat Malmesbury at Parys A on Saturday by five wickets.
The visitors were sent in to bat on a hot and windy summer's day. Malmesbury was in deep trouble when they lost their fourth wicket in the 18th over with the score on 56.
Willem Bruintjies and Ulrich Greffrath shared a 42 run partnership for the fifth wicket before Bruintjies (25 4x1, 6x3) succumbed to Ockert Erasmus.
The rest of the batting order only managed to add another 79 runs to make the total 177 and were all back in the hut in the 53rd over.
Greffrath contributed 39 runs, which included six boundaries with Jason Cicero (31 4x3) also adding some valuable runs to Malmesbury’s total. Erasmus (4/52), Ultalyn Ernstzen (3/21) and Alfredo Adams (2/50) were the main destroyers for Paarl.
The home side lost their first three wickets for 30 runs in the first 10 overs of their batting innings.
Bobby Nicholson entered the fray and shared a 61 run partnership with Dale Campbell for the fourth wicket, which included eight boundaries and one six. Nicholson (48 4x8, 6x1) was bowled with the score on 91. Campbell lost his wicket in the 32nd over with the score on 124.
Carlo Crotz (25 not out 4x4, 6x1) and Lynal Jansen (24 not out 4x3, 6x1) shared and unbeaten 54 runs for the sixth wicket.
Cicero (2/31) and A September (2/40) took wickets for the visitors. The second team comfortably won their match against the home side Malmesbury by nine wickets.
The home side batted first and was restricted to 137/10 by Paarl. Charl Malan (6/17) and Peter-John de Villiers took the wickets.
For the home side only T Steyn (25 4x3), L v/d Merwe (45 4x4, 6x2) and S Martins (24 not out 4x2) made valuable contributions with the bat.
The visitors lost their first wicket in the first over with one run on the scoreboard. From thereon it was one way traffic as captain, Graham Adams and Wade Anderson shared an unbeaten 141 run partnership for the second wicket which included 13 boundaries.
When the game finished in the 28th over Adams was on 69 not out with eight boundaries and Anderson on 55 with 5 boundaries.
The third team hosted Klapmuts on Saturday and restricted the visiting team to 125/10.
The home side’s Brent Hendricks (3/35) and Hugh Arendse (5/26) were in devastating form as they ripped through the visitors.
For the visitors only JD de Villiers (52 4x8, 6x1) and L Norman (26 4x4) showed some resistance.
The home side’s Wilbur Alexander (51 4x7) and Arendse (36 4x3, 6x3) made sure that the match ended in the 28th over.
A Louw (2/19) was the visitors’ best bowler. The home side won the match by five wickets.
Novel Paarl Cricket Club is starting its 45 over campaign against Paarl East Cricket Club this coming weekend.
The first team travels to New Orleans while the second team is playing at the Parys A field.
