Spier: The 2007 Spier Poetry Festival on 2 and 3 February at 19:30, presented by SAFM, is a legotla of prophets, poets and singers. Hear the written word, spoken and even sung by the wordsmiths called to stage by Antjie Krog, internationally celebrated poet and author. The line-up includes Daimler-Chrysler Poetry Award winner Gabeba Baderoon, Catherine Kidd from Canada, Nuno Júdice from Portugal, Ingrid de Kok (SA), Kgafela oa Mogogodi, rapp star Jitsvinger, musician Rocco de Villiers, Brett Bailey and many more. Orchestra: The fourth concert of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra’s summer season is on 8 February at the Cape Town city hall with conductor Owain Arwel Hughes. The soloist is the award-winning Florian Uhlig (piano) performing Mendelssohn’s Piano concerto No 1 in G minor. The programme also includes Britten’s “Four Sea Interludes” from Peter Grimes and Holst’s “The Planets”: this exciting and popular work has not been performed by a large orchestra in Cape Town for a while.
