2007-02-01

THE La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre will present their newest show, Viaje Flamenco, at the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre in Stellenbosch from 7 to 17 February.

Viaje Flamenco runs nightly at 20:15, except on 11 and 12 February.
Geoffrey Hyland will direct Viaje Flamenco, which means Flamenco Journey in Spanish, with musical direction by Bienyameen Camrodien.

It investigates the connections between the various cultures that contributed to the formation of the Art of Flamenco, including Arabic, Indian, Sephardic, Iberian (Spanish regional) and African music, song and dance.

Says Artistic Director Carolyn Holden, “This project began with the creation of Route Expressions, which we staged at Artscape last year and this show continues the journey through time, exploring all flamenco's influences culminating in the Western Cape, where La Rosa explores flamenco’s place in the South African context.”

For Viaje Flamenco, Carolyn Holden, who is also known as Carolina Rosa, will be collaborating with several acclaimed South African choreographers such as Maxwell Xolani Rani, Savitri Naidoo, newcomer Lexi Parolis and the Madrid-based artists La Truco and Joaquin Ruiz.

Together they have created an exciting new work, richly textured by cultural diversity and commonality. Holden has recently returned from Madrid where she worked with La Truco and Ruiz, sourcing choreography and specialist techniques such as the use of tail skirts and shawls.

The cast of Viaje Flamenco includes two guest artists from Spain, namely Joaquin Ruiz and the cantor José Salinas who performed with La Rosa in 2006 in Flamenco Puro at the Obz Café.

Also dancing in the show will be Carolina Rosa herself and the full La Rosa company, members of the Vadhini Indian Arts Academy and trainees and dancers selected from La Rosa’s development initiatives.

Working with Bienyameen in the musical ensemble will be Al Faried, Robert Jeffery, Max Starcke, singers Nicole Holm and Loreén Swartz, and percussionists Ronan Skillen, Robert Davids and Thandi Swartbooi. Dicky Longhurst has created new costumes and the lighting design is by Daniel Galloway.

Tickets cost R90 and R100 from Computicket or 083-915-8000.
