New high school in Paarl
2007-02-01
THE new school year saw the opening of The Oaks College, a new independent high school, in Paarl. It is the first English medium co-educational (boys and girls) high school in Paarl.
The school developed out of The Oaks Preparatory School, started twenty years ago by the current owner, Tessa Strack, and a friend as a small playschool (Friends’ Playschool).
The beginning of 2006 saw the intake of the first high school learners and the appointment of three itinerant teachers.
At the beginning of this year, after having more than tripled its number of learners, the high school moved into its own fully air-conditioned premises in Brug Street consisting of six classrooms, a small media centre, an office and a staff room as well as an outside recreational area.
Five full-time and two part-time teachers as well as a secretary were appointed. Uwe Strack was appointed as the high school’s first principal. At present the school caters for learners in Grades 7 to 9. Classes are kept small (maximum of ten learners) to ensure individual attention, optimum learning and the attainment of the best possible academic standards.
The school offers all the learning areas as well as a third language as an enrichment subject.
In addition the school offers after hours German as a second additional language to high school learners from other schools as well as remedial classes in Economical Management Sciences, Accounting and Mathematics (subject to demand).
Last year five matriculants taking German after hours at the school obtained distinctions.
The school will gradually be extended to matric, and a planning committee is investigating a future campus. Affiliation to ISASA (Independent Schools’ Association of South Africa) is pending as well as a new, expanded site. The school still has limited vacancies for learners in Grades 7 to 9.
