Local hand-cycling event needs a hand

THE second Paarl Rock International Hand Cycling Challenge will take place in Paarl from 5 to 11 March.
The week’s programme includes road race over 42km, time trials of 21km and a hill climb race of 1,5km.
The road race and time trial will take place along the new route surrounding the Paarl Mall. The hill climb will take place at the Afrikaans Language Monument.
The event will conclude with the 108km Argus Cycling Tour in Cape Town.
Hand-cycles are powered by the arms and upper body and is quickly becoming a favourite sport among disabled athletes.
It is due to this popularity that international wheel chair racer and Paarl resident, Ernst van Dyk, and event organiser Maranda Fourie decided to bring this unique event to Paarl.
Disabled athletes from as far afield as America, Poland, Switzerland, German, Netherlands, South Africa and Namibia will compete during the week.
“Funds are urgently needed for the further development of hand cycling in the Boland,” says Fourie.
“We are also in need of donations for prize money in each of the categories as well as petrol for the volunteers that will be transporting the athletes during their two week stay in Paarl.”
The organisers wish to develop the sport further among local disabled athletes and interested parties can contact Maranda on 082-515-9860 or marandafourie@yahoo.com. For more info see www.handcycling.co.za.
