IN what will be a historical match, the rugby team of Roses United will take on a touring Argentinian team this weekend.
The team of the Santa Fe Rugby Club will be the first ever touring side from overseas to play a match on Roses’ homeground, Pelican Park.
The Santa Fe team is currently touring the country.
This team from Argentina is famous for its strong scrumming technique.
This facet of the game was the weak point of Roses United last year and Saturday’s match will thus be a good indication of how the defending Boland champions will fare this season.
Both teams are fans of running the ball which will in turn provide some exciting rugby for the large crowd expected.
Roses have received a big injection by way of financial sponsorship through Safica and Wellington Fruit Processors.
Safica is a sports media company driven by Kevin Ferguson and well-known rugby writer Mark Keohane.
The Argentinian team, Santa Fe, is selected from a population of more than a million people.
The game of rugby is no longer strange to this soccer crazy country. The Argentians are accustomed to prosperity and Santa Fe is home to many Italians. Local rugby fans can look forward to a game with a lot of passion and running rugby.
The third team kicks off at 16:00 and the first team at 18:30. Spectators are advised to bring their own chairs and umbrellas or gazebos.
