Hoax bomb threats hit Paarl
2007-02-08
THREE service stations in Paarl had to shut down business for several hours on Monday morning after receiving anonymous bomb threats.
The first victim was Droomers Garage where a threatening phone call was received at approximately 07:00.
The police were called in and the immediate area surrounding Droomers was cordoned off and the site evacuated.
The dog unit then searched the area for explosives, but the search proved that the threat had been a hoax.
Later the same morning both Monument and Courtrai Motors in Paarl South also received bomb threats and the same procedures had to be taken. This also proved to be a hoax.
A spokesperson for the police said that threats like this were highly irresponsible as they had to be taken seriously and the affected areas shut down and searched.
“This not only wastes the police’s time, but it also is a financial loss to the businesses involved.”
He said that the hoax calls were being traced and it was suspected that they had been made by the same person.
* Shortly before Christmas a similar incident was reported at Edgars in Lady Grey Street, Paarl. The area was closed down and thoroughly searched, but it also turned out to be a hoax.
