Boland local takes chess title
2007-02-15
FOR the first time in a good couple of years, a Bolander has walked away with the honours during the Boland Chess Open Championship.
In spite of strong competition from national chess players, Kenny Solomons and Donovan van der Heever, Henry Steel of Stellenbosch took the title during the tournament that was played in Paarl last weekend.
Steel, a learner from Paul Roos Gymnasium, beat 63 other players for the title.
His tactics outsmarted Solomons in the final match.
The Boland Chess Union hosts the Stellenbosch Chess Open at Paul Roos Gymnasium on 23 February.
The open class will start at 19:00 on the Friday evening and continue the next day along with the u.14 age category.
Registration times are 17:00 to 18:45 for Friday and 07:00 to 07:45 on Saturday.
