2007-02-15

THE only cricket the teams of Paarl Cricket Club could enjoy this weekend was the One Day International being played between the Proteas and Pakistan at Newlands.

No matches could be played as rain prevented the club team playing in its first top eight Premier Cup match against Easterns Cricket Club in Kraaifontein.

Last weekend Paarl suffered a big blow when Paarl East shouldered them out of a semi-final spot in the one day competition.

The Novel Paarl Cricket Club enjoyed success against both Young Peoples and Bergrivier.

Victories for Paarl East over these same two teams however meant that they secured a spot in the semi-final thanks to their five log points lead over Paarl.

Paarl I (233/7) trounced Young Peoples (153) at Dal Josaphat by 80 runs.

Leading with the bat for Paarl were Lindsay van der Berg (34 4x2), Robin Andrews (95 4x11) and Bobby Nichollson (32 4x3, 6x1) whilst Charl Malan (4/21) and captain Lynal Jansen (3/23) took wickets.

Peoples' bowling attack was led by Ettiene Jacobs (3/42) and Lorenzo Jacobs (2/39) but none of their batsmen came to the party.

The next day Paarl humiliated Bergrivier Cricket Club at Parys sport grounds beating them by eight wickets in a match that was over before lunch.

Clayton August (5/24), Lyndon Fredericks (2/14) and Ultalyn Ernstzen (2/4) played a big part in demolishing the visitors who were left reeling at 12/6 early on.

The home side scored the winning runs in the 14th over with Andrews (21 4x2, 6x1) and Tenysson Botes (26 not out 4x2, 6x1) ensuring an emphatic win.
