First cycling tour in Boland this weekend

First cycling tour in Boland this weekend

2007-02-15

THE Boland Cycling Union will host the 2007 Tour de Boland three-day cycle tour in and around the town of Paarl this weekend.

The events starts today and will cater for two categories, the u.23/Elite and a veteran (30+) category.

Two separate groups will start each stage. It is expected that the top cyclists in the Western Cape will participate in this tour.

The tour will be followed by the Bouckaert-Soenen Paarl fun ride and league event on the Sunday.

The Tour de Boland is over four stages and kicks off with a 2,8km individual hill climb at the Taal Monument. The first rider will start at 17:30.

Tomorrow cyclists will race a 120km route in and around Paarl which will start and finish at Ivanhoe Park in Klein Drakenstein Road, Paarl.

This stage will start at 10:00.

Saturday's third stage over 80km will start at 08:30 at the winery at Paardeberg.

The final stage will be a one hour Criterion on Saturday afternoon at Breda Street, Paarl. The veterans will start at 15:00 and the
u.23/Elite at 16:05.

Races will also be hosted for the Development/u.12/u.14 riders at 13:00, u.16 at 13:30 and Open (juniors, u.23/elite/veterans not in the tour) at 14:05.

The fee for competing in the Criterion (not tour riders) is R5 (development), R30 (u.10/u.12/u.14/u.16) and R40 (juniors/u.23/elite/veterans).

It is the vision of the Tour de Boland organisers to grow this event in stature and host it annually. The possibility also exists that this tour can be extended to more than three days.

Cyclists who wish to enter for the Criterion can do so on the day of the race before 12:45 at the race venue.

Entry forms for the Tour de Boland three day stage race are available at Kevin Green Sport in Breda Street, Paarl.

The organisers will not handle any entries on the day of the start of the Tour de Boland. Cyclists are encouraged to enter before 13 February.

Inquiries: Ian Goetham (083-949-4501) or Hendrik Lemmer (083-771-1143).
