THE first cricket century was scored at the picturesque Welbedacht Cricket Oval recently between the teams of Stanford (near Hermanus) and Settlers (Port Elizabeth).

The hundred was scored by the legendary Pieter ‘Striker’ Strydom who was in action for the Settlers team.

Strydom played for the Proteas in two tests and ten one day internationals in the 2000/2001 season under the captaincy of Hansie Cronjé.

After the game a jubilant Strydom received a 5 litre bottle of the award winning Welbedacht Cricket Pitch blend which is the wine farm’s well-known Bordeaux-style blend (60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon).

The wine boasts four stars in the John Platter wine guide, Gold at the Michelangelo International Wine Awards and a Best in Class at the International Wine and Spirit Competition.

“It is a great honour and privilege to score the first century at one of the most beautiful grounds in the country and to receive this bottle of wine from Schalk Burger Senior - I am just speechles,” Strydom said.

The cricketgrounds were established in 2005 and several matches have been hosted there including the national u.13 championships, pre-season games for England teams such as Surrey and regular social games.

Players enjoy a true taste of the Boland winelands when playing the Welbedacht pitch situated next to the vineyards and the revolutionary new Welbedacht Cellar.
