Van der Walt strikes oil in Texas

THE Paarl golfer, Dawie van der Walt, has already made his mark at the Lamar College in Texas.
Van der Walt, who started at Lamar in September last year after receiving a golf sponsorship from the American college, was recently named Lamar’s Southland Conference (SLC) Freshman Golfer of the Year.
Van der Walt also narrowly missed out on being Player of the Year for this area of South Texas.
He was included in the college’s All SLC first team off the bat and led the team and the SLC with a spring scoring average of 72,92. His season scoring average of 71,70 ranks 18th in the Golfstat collegiate ratings.
Van der Walt also won medallist honours at Baylor and Nevada this season and finished among the top 10 players in seven of the 10 tournaments he has played in.
He has further shot par or better in 18 of the 27 rounds this season. He recently returned to his home country, ranked as the number one amateur player in South Africa, to defend his strokeplay title at the SA Amateur Tournament.
He however had not much luck, finishing only in the top 20. Coaches at Lamar worked on changing Van der Walt’s grip. It was these growing pain that hampered the 21-year-old as he struggled for form in this year’s SA Amateur Open.
It’s all about long term goals though and Dawie has already settled into his new grip, saying that he is now hitting the ball much further and more accurately.
