New release
2007-03-01
THE historic family wine farm Landskroon on the western slope of Paarl Mountain renowned for its big reds and port, has released two new vintages in its acclaimed Paul de Villiers range of limited release wines.
The new wines from the 2004 vintage, Paul de Villiers Shiraz and Paul de Villiers Reserve, come highly recommended having both garnered a gold medal at the 2006 Michelangelo International Wine Awards.
Inspired by Cellarmaster Paul de Villiers in memory of his late father and namesake, and crafted by winemaker Fanie Geyser, these prestigious wines are the culmination of nine generations of accumulated knowledge, experience and tradition at Landskroon by the de Villiers family.
The Paul de Villiers Shiraz 2004 is a full-bodied wine with a good ten-year maturation potential. Made in a contemporary style, it has delicious rich flavours of black berry and piquant pepper supported by tones of spicy oak gained from ageing in predominantly new American oak barrels.
All five vintages of this prized Shiraz were awarded four stars by the definitive John Platter wine guide, whilst the 2003 and 2000 vintages were awarded gold medals respectively at the Austrian Wine Challenge in 2006 and the Michelangelo International Wine Awards in 2002.
The grapes for this prized wine are harvested exclusively from Landskroon bush vines. Paul de Villiers, who considers Shiraz his favourite grape variety, believes the Landskroon climate and soil are ideal for the making of Shiraz. The leaner soils result in lower production but ensure good quality grapes.
