Tasting academy

DELEGATES at the inaugural Wine Tasting Academy came away from the intensive three-day workshop “inspired and motivated”, commenting further that the event was “exceptionally valuable”.
They had the rare privilege of tasting, assessing and discussing some 300 superb wines, among them international benchmarks from some of the most celebrated wine regions in the world.
The event, held at the ArabellaSheraton Hotel in Cape Town last month, was the fulfilment of a commitment made by Wine magazine and Michael Fridjhon after the 2006 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show to develop the wine judging talent pool and raise the bar for wine tasting standards in the country.
“Since the course aims to enhance the skills of wine judges, rather than to `teach the art of wine tasting’, it is unique in South Africa.”
The programme brought together 20 wine industry personnel from across the spectrum - winemakers, restaurateurs, sommeliers, retailers and wine journalists with international and local guest lecturers.
At the end of the workshop, delegates underwent a written tasting exam involving ten wines and including a detailed assessment of four of them.
The Tasting Academy, to become an annual event, strives to have an extensive and transformational reach, with scholarships available to promising candidates who require help with funding the course fees. At this stage prospective candidates should be industry professionals actively involved in tasting and assessing wine.
