Paarl's hopes dashed
2007-03-01
THE hopes of the Novel Paarl Cricket Club to secure the Super 8 Trophy were dashed on Saturday when they were beaten by the Brackenfell Cricket Club at the Parys grounds.
Brackenfell batted first and put a respectable 236/9 on the score board.
Wiaan Smit (62 4x8, 6x1), Christy Adam (32 4x4) and Willem du Toit (45 6x5) added valuable runs.
Ockert Erasmus (3/37) and Rohan Goetham (2/72) were the home side’s wicket takers.
Paarl’s innings started disastrously as the home side lost four wickets with only seven runs on the score board in the 11th over.
Wickets started to tumble at regular intervals and the home side was all out for a mere 103 runs in the 33rd over.
Only Bobby Nicholson (37 4x6, 6x1) and Clint Philander (20 4x3) ensured some respect to the total. Du Toit (3/59) and Gertjie Fourie destroyed the home side’s batsmen who lost their wickets through indifferent batting options.
Novel Paarl CC II (274/9) drew against Brackenfell CC II (284/10). Paarl's best performances were by Heinrich Daniels (3/62), Cameron Cupido (2/1 and 60 4x5, 6x4), PJ de Villiers (36 4x3) and Fagrie Jacobs (67 not out 4x11).
Paarl III (195/5) beat Paarl East III (193/10) by five wickets. Elrico Basson (4/41) caused havoc amongst the visitors’ batsmen.
Bradley Isaacs (80 not out 4x6, 6x3), Brian Hendricks (32 4x3) and M Julius (25 4x2) ensured a five wicket victory for the home side. Paarl’s fourth team (149/10) lost to Northdene I (235/5) of Kraaifontein by 86 runs.
This weekend Novel Paarl I plays Maties at Parys A, Paarl II plays Paarl East at New Orleans, whilst the third and fourth teams play away against Spes Bona (Cloetesville) and Kromco (Grabouw) respectively.
