Police must serve the public

Police must serve the public

2007-03-08

It is sad that one has to read about what happened to Pieter le Roux in Wellington, who got no response when he phoned the police for help.

The crime rate in South Africa is bad, because the people who are in charge of safety and security are not disciplined to do their jobs properly.

I was a police officer from 1972 until 1997 and in those years we were proud of our SA Police uniform and we did our job to the best of our abilities.

This excuse that when the shift changes no-one can help, is nonsense. It is an excuse for laziness.

I was a senior warrant officer in those days and I remember that we worked 13:00 to 21:00 instead of the rest of our shift who worked 14:00 to 22:00. Once a man came into the charge office and reported a motor vehicle accident at 19:00. He asked if he could go home to bath and change and come back afterwards.

I told him that my shift ended at 21:00. He returned at 20:50 and I duly helped him, leaving at 22:00, and did not complain about overtime.

It was my duty and I was being paid to be a servant to the public.
Too many policemen have the attitude that the public owes them.
To all local policemen - pull up your socks, be proud of your uniform and do the job that you get paid to do.
