Lifecycle week starts with a bang
2007-03-08
NOT even the rainy weather could dampen the official start of LifeCycle Week this weekend, as record numbers participated in both the Cape Argus Pick ’n Pay Mountain Bike Challenge and the accompanying Junior Cycle and Tricycle Tours.
Boschendal Wine Estate was jam-packed with cyclists and spectators.
Not even the entry limit increase from 2000 to 2500 riders was enough, as wannabe participants queued at the Dirtopia Trail Centre on Saturday in the hope to secure a late entry. In the end, 2900 riders braved the three routes - a 61% entry increase from 2006.
“We couldn't have asked for a better course,” says Meurant Botha, organiser and trail builder of the MTB Challenge.
“We had just enough rain to soften up the route and get rid of the dust, but it wasn’t too muddy, which made for comfortable riding.”
The overall winner in the men's category of the 55km was Renay Groustra who crossed the finish line in a time of 02:12,28.
Close on his heels was Franschhoek rider Geddan Ruddock in 02:13,37. Taking the third spot was Gerard Dirks (02:14,54).
The women’s winner of the 55km race was Sara Muhl who finished in 02:31,38. She was followed by Ellane van Wyk (02:38,16) and Heletjé van Staden (02:41,00).
The top three positions in the 26km race for senior men went to Johan Carstens (01:13,36), Henry Fagan (01:15,51) and Graig Macgillivray (01:15,57). The top finishers among the senior women in this disctance were Lara Thompson 01:27,35, Nadia Britz (01:30,11) and Elizna Lourens (01:31,01).
