THE gallery at the beautiful Grande Provence Estate, home of many award winning wines, has established itself as a leading location for contemporary South African art and a home for some of the best known South African artists.

It is drawing a wide and diverse audience from around the globe as well as Southern Africa and has won itself a reputation for collectors of South African art both at home and from countries such as the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and Ireland.

The Gallery’s 2007 calendar starts with an exhibition by drawing and ceramic artists Marieke Kruger and Ralph Johnson which opened on Sunday 25 March.

Marieke Kruger studied at the University of Stellenbosch and the Witwatersrand Technicon and holds a Masters Degree in Fine Arts.

She held various teaching posts and is currently teaching full- time at the Jack Meyer Art Centre in Paarl.

Of her work, Marieke says: “In my work there is a fusion of intimate experiences, associations and images with universal events and metaphors.

“I suggest through my work the need to view one’s life from a different vantage point in order to gain a deeper insight into aspects of human existence which sometimes seem inexplicable.”

Ralph Johnson studied at the University of Natal and Staffordshire University in the UK. Until last year he was Head of the Art and Design Department at Boland College’s Paarl Campus. Marieke was a pupil of Ralph’s.

In May follows an exhibition by renowned Johannesburg sculptor Guy du Toit and Paarl based artist Johann du Plessis.

A show by Vernon Swart, with an old fashioned and frivolous flavour, will coincide with Bastille Day.

The second half of the year will feature a group of artists from Port Elizabeth followed by an exhibition of drawings by leading artists of the genre, including Angus Taylor.

The year will end with a group show with the theme Angels.
