Paarl team has trouble batting
2007-03-15
AFTER restricting the batsmen of Hermanus to 205/10 it seems that the match looked like a foregone conclusion for the boys of Paarl Cricket Club.
The home side asked the visitors to bat on a pitch that looked good for batting.
Rejean Botha and Steven Forde added 90 runs to the total before Hermanus lost their second wicket on 123/2. The two of them were scoring at nearly four runs per over.
When Botha (56 4x7, 6x2) and Forde (47 4x2, 6x2) were dismissed the run rate started to drop and wickets began to fall.
The visitors lost their last five wickets for the addition of only 35 runs in 11 overs after being on 170/5 in the 48th over.
Wayne Truter (27), Wallace Albertyn (21) and G Ferreira (20) were the only other batsmen that scored more than 20 runs.
For the home side Hilroy Paulse (3/34), Lyndon Fredericks (3/40), Rohan Goetham (2/56) and Ockert Erasmus (2/47) were the best bowlers.
The home side’s innings started disastrously as opening batsman, Tennysson Botes was adjudged to be leg before wicket by the umpire.
Most of the batsmen lost their wickets through indifferent stroke selection against some mediocre bowling. As a result the side was all back in the hut for a paltry 136 runs.
Only Robin Andrews (28 4x4) and Ockert Erasmus (27 4x2) showed some resistance, but also lost their wickets through some poor shots.
Mark Temple (6/38) took the wickets for the visitors. Novel Paarl thus lost the match by 70 runs.
Both the second and third teams won their matches against their counterparts of Stellenbosch & Districts and Easterns Cricket Clubs by default as they could not field any teams due to unknown reasons.
On Saturday Paarl’s first team plays away to Coronations Cricket Club at Pniel, the second team clashes with Maties Cricket Club at Coetzenburg whilst the third team has a bye. The fourth team plays against the Franschhoek Cricket Club at the Parys A grounds.
The Paarl teams will also be in action on Wednesday. The second team is home to Young Peoples Cricket Club at Parys A, the third team travels to Stellenbosch for their match against Maties, and the fourth team squares up to the fellows of the Klapmuts Cricket Club at Klapmuts.
The Novel Paarl Cricket Club is having a family day at the Parys Grounds on 24 March to end the season. Members will participate in a Six-a-Side competition. A slippery slide and jumping castle will be available for the kids.
Everybody is welcome to join in the fun.
