Paarl increase their lead

THE Novel Paarl cricket team had no trouble in dealing with the threat from their nearest rivals, Maties, in their Boland Super League encounter on Saturday.

Paarl won this home game at the Parys Cricket Grounds by a convincing margin of seven wickets.

Brackenfell, who are currently in the third spot on the log, also lost to Young Peoples at Dal Josaphat, aiding Paarl in opening up an even greater gap to remain firmly on course for the championship.

Maties posted only 168 in their allotted 60 overs, with the young Lyndon Fredericks (4/45) wreaking havoc in the middle order.

Denver van Reenen (2/46) and Rohan Goetham (2/30) chipped in to keep the visitors under pressure, and it was only Wimpie Louw (49), Clifford Prinsloo (28) and Magnus van Rooyen (27) who showed some resistance with the bat.

The Paarl batsmen were in scintillating form, but opening batsman Carlo Crotz (51 not out) had to work hard against some nagging bowling towards the end.

In contrast to Crotz' three boundaries, partner Bobby Nicholson (45 in 30 balls) showed the visiting bowlers scant respect, hitting six boundaries and two sixes during his 35 minutes at the crease.

A 90 run partnership between Crotz and Marco Walters (39 4x5) saw the log leaders to within striking distance of the easy target.

The Novel Paarl team will host Brackenfell on Saturday.

Paarl II also retained their position at the top of the log, after beating Maties II by 92 runs at Coetzenburg.

Lindsay van der Berg (47), Andrew Cupido (35) and Graham Adams (33) batted well to set the home team a target of 214 in 60 overs. Phillips (3/28) and Theron (3/43) impressed with the ball for the students.

Morgan Adams (5/44) excelled with the ball for Paarl, ably assisted by Kurt Martin (3/38).

Marius Botha (35 not out) received little support and the home team was bundled out for 121.

On Saturday, Paarl II travel to Brackenfell, Paarl III to Easterns, while Paarl IV host Wellington.

The Over 35 teams of Paarl and Young Peoples play each other at the Parys Grounds on Sunday.
