Vineyards friendly ends in fight
2007-03-15
THERE was nothing friendly about the friendly match between the rugby clubs of Vineyards and Strand Pioneers which was played on Saturday.
The game in Strand was stopped with 18 minutes left on the clock when spectators invaded the field and started assaulting the players.
The big Vineyards pack proved to be too much for their opposition earlier on, with the Paarl team including six tight-heads in their team of 22. Consequently the Vineyards pack at times walked over the Strand scrum.
Thaamir Moerat (flank) and Arshad Abrahams (lock) also managed to steal five of the opposition’s line-out balls which meant that Strand had little if no possession.
Vineyards went into the half time break leading 17-3 after tries by Anton Snyman (wing), Zahier Chippendale (eighth man) and Arief Slamdien (full-back). Slamdien added the extra two points with the boot.
The Strand team had no answer to counter the powerful Vineyards forwards and started to play dirty which ultimately led to a fight, with spectators invading the pitch.
On Saturday Vineyards play Allandale at Allandale Prison.
