Township talent

I DRAW what I see, says Aaron Gqiba of his poignant pen sketches depicting township life in all its facets.

Children playing in the street, a woman doing her washing outside a shack, young men talking along the roadside, the devastation of a shack fire - life in all its dimensions.

He also does cartoons - political figures his first choice.
Gqiba (20) grew up in Colesberg where he finished grade 10 before moving to 11 Sand Street in OR, Wellington.

“For as long as I can remember, I was interested in sketching,” he says with a shy smile.

And yes, he has even sold some of his work at the Waterfront.
But now he has no paper or pens, and lacks the means to buy them.

So, until he can lay his hands on some material, he will just have to keep images in his mind.

“Or maybe I’ll find some wood,” he says, because he also enjoys making wooden sculptures.
