Two locals in Ikhwezi Theatre Festival
2007-03-15
DEVELOPMENT theatre will once again celebrate its annual triumph when the Ikhwezi Theatre Festival bursts onto the boards of the Baxter Sanlam Studio with 14 new indigenous plays running daily until 24 March.
It is the culmination of a comprehensive programme of workshops where 25 young directors and 20 young actors were taken through their paces with fortnightly two-day workshops, leading up to the festival.
Two Mbekweni residents are in the line-up - writer/director Thami Mbongo and his co-director Andile Nebulane, who is also acting in the production.
The drama ‘Things Are Bad - iJampile Lendaba’ is written by Mbongo, produced and co-directed by Alison Darcy and Nebulane.
The cast includes Asanda Rilityana, Amina Nordien, Mzwandile Nofemele, Phumzile Mangali, Mfundo Hashe, Andile Nebulane and Earl Mentor. The stage manager is Sbusiso Dyantyi.
When young people find crime to be a source of entertainment, something is wrong. The play examines the terrifying life in the townships where crime is rampant.
‘Things are bad - iJampile Lendaba’ looks beyond gangsterism and seeks to explore all the connections between criminals, the community, the police and government.
By questioning the society in which we live, the play hopes to show how we can all make a difference.
The overall aims of the festival include developing critical thinking among audiences and theatre practitioners through the arts; popularising social programmes such as health, environment, education and human rights, using the arts to stimulate community initiatives; developing new playwrights in the Western Cape, and exposing new and upcoming actors, writers and directors to mainstream theatre.
The festival runs daily, Mondays to Saturdays, at 10:00, 12:00, 13:30, 15:00 and 19:00.
