Going to grassroots with schools
2007-03-15
THE comical stage production called “Mamma Dell’s Secret” by the Klein Libertas Theatre group, was staged in the Mbekweni community hall recently for local schools.
The main aim of this production is to create awareness regarding health issues amongst the learners and to change negative attitudes towards health. It uses interactive theatre techniques to involve the learners during the course of the play.
The production is the brainchild of the Municipal Health Services Directorate of the Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM), who together with the Klein Libertas Theatre group from Stellenbosch has produced this environmental awareness project in the form of interactive theatre for schools in the district.
The contents of the play included health aspects like personal, food and toilet hygiene, littering, water saving and of course Mamma Dell’s secret ingredient which she uses in her frikkadels.
Some senior learners at Mbekweni Senior Primary who attended the show on Thursday participated, while others laughed their heads off in pure enjoyment of the show.
Bongile Mantsai plays the part of Mamma Dell and Alex Marais plays Mario, the French restaurateur who wants to steal her recipe.
As he finds out at the end, the most important ingredient of her tasty frikkadels is that she prepares it with love. Pierre-Arnold Theron plays the part of Boetie, who just wants to make a new start in life in the city.
The production is led by Johan Fourie of the Klein Libertas Theatre, and the producer is Juanita Swanepoel
The play will run until 20 April, giving 80 performances throughout the district.
Schools in Paarl, Wellington, Saron, Ceres, Wolseley, Tulbagh, Worcester, De Doorns, Montagu, Ashton, Robertson and Bonnievale will be visited. For enquiries phone CWDM’s Jacques le Roux at 021-873-1121.
