An illegal market for firearms
2007-03-15
ROBBERS and burglars are targeting owners of firearms. Police in Paarl and Paarl East have issued a stern warning that gunowners should take extra care and that any suspect behaviour or gang-related activity be reported immediately.
There is concern that the gang warfare on the Cape Flats might be spilling over to a territorial battle in Paarl East.
“There is already a noticeable unease in the areas frequented by gangs,” an officer said.
“Gangs are grouping, shots are being fired and allegations of intimidation are received. We believe that firearms are being stock-piled for a possible outbreak of violence.”
The former police chief of the Boland, Commissioner Ganief Daniels who is now deputy director of the Western Cape, was mugged and robbed of his service pistol in Parow, Cape Town, recently. Daniels had just been to a bank in the N1 City Centre and was walking with his briefcase in broad daylight, when two robbers struck.
Two 24-hour telephone numbers of officers on duty at the Paarl East police and the detective branch, are 082-411-4197 and 082-411-3435.
